The Yoshinkan yearly calendar has a distinctive rhythm. With each season, a particular focus. This fall in California was no exception. Our continuing Budo Today Series of hosted events have featured…

Jacques Payet Sensei, September 16, 18, 19 for a series of kurobikai or black belt clinics. Payet Sensei is an incredible resource and was our guest for several weeks this fall. Without a doubt, he is the foremost English language authority on Shioda Sensei and Yoshinkan Aikido!

Ando Tsuneo Shihan, November 11, 12, 13, 14 for an immersion camp gasshuku with co-instructor Payet Sensei. These two remarkable instructors were among the last of Yoshinkan Aikido founder Shioda Sensei's uchi deshi. They offer us a portal into the old, austere apprenticeship system of instruction that Shioda Sensei himself experienced as a young deshi to Uyeshiba Sensei in 1932. Each shares an urgency in their teaching to pass along their appreciation of Yoshinkan aikido.

Both of these seminars were offered a balance of mat time and social events. Both the September and November schedule were identical. Following our Thursday evening opening training sessions, there were informal receptions at a nearby Japanese yakitori-ya. Not merely a North American version of a Japanese B-B-Q, Honda-ya is the real thing!

Each seminar had also featured a local visit to a nearby 100-year old California hot spring. This gave our guests a taste of the best that California had to offer: woke up at the beach, trained with our friends, basked in the desert and returned to another warm reception near the ocean.

This Budo Today Series of events were crafted to offer the finest in Yoshinkan instruction in the most enjoyable of environments. The reason was simple. We wanted our guests to return!
